VARANASI
http://traveltournewindia.googlepages.com/home
let me introduce myself.......................................................................with a travalouge
I had a scientific conference in Varanasi not very long back. On the train which I boarded I found a co-passenger who was a stock broker of middle age. Train is the usual place where you make friends very fast and forget them too very fast…….immediately when you step down at your station. Through him I learnt Banaras/ Varanasi is also called kashi………. sweet surprise!! For me …I heard about kashi before……….in lots of devotional song about kashi vishwanath ………I was indeed became bit more excited after learning that the city I was visiting has three names ……..all three very popular…………one stone……………three birds ; philosophy!!!!!
Journey was fine………..as it was A/C compartment …………imagine traveling in sleeper class in summer in north India , whole body fry!!!! Along with beja fry!!!. Checked in a reasonably good hotel but what’s the use? As power is gone for hours in this part of country……..A/C won’t be working even you occupy A/c room……..forget generators……oops! Probably I am generalizing to other hotels………I might be wrong……as I am not familiar with other hotels………anyway the hotel I was staying was one of the high end one.
After winding up the conference with my presentation, I decided to visit the famous (now I term it as infamous) Hindu templekashi vishwanath. There was a colleague with me who also wanted to have the darshana of the god…….so went out for the darshana together. But he was more interested in visiting templeSankat Vimochan- the temple of Hanuman, as he was a die hard fan of hanuman, he said since childhood. But soon I learnt that he was more interested in visiting it than kashi vishwanath temple as Ashwarya Rai was made non-mangalik from manglik status.i,e , was turned into lesser evil by marrying her off to a tree in the premises of this temple. He was not ready to miss this one. He virtually dragged me to this temple. He was one of very few hindus who I have come across, who is so religious……….. we saw few trees in the premises……………we couldn’t zero on to which tree being the husband of Aishwarya Rai……….but he was not disappointed as he met his favorite god…!!!……..very few religions offer so much variety to their follower as Hinduism offers……….as the count goes on there are one crore god in Hindu religion that is slightly less than 1:100 god to people ratio.
Next we headed towards my prime destination, kashi vishwanath temple……..soon after stopping, we were approached by a middle aged person who abruptly ended his poker game, after seeing us. He offered us to be our guide during the temple visit……..for twenty rupees………. “Not a bad deal” my friend told me……..I too did not resist- ten rupees per head.
Our so called guide led us to temple via a narrow lane. Dirty to the core……..stopped in between ……a shop selling pooje related items. He led us inside……..asked us to keep our foot wares at specified place………valuables inside a locker………he told that there were quite a few incidents of pick pocketing in the temple. .so, I decided to keep my purse too in the locker……….he was quick to downplay what he said in the very early moment... he insisted that I keep my purse…….as things were not that bad…………as we were about to live the shop……the young owner of that shop handed over the pooje materials for worship even without asking for it., my friend did not resist. Owner was around twenty seven years old, ear plugged with an I pod……long black hair …fashionably looking religious clothing. Then he offered me one set of pooje materials ……..which I readily resisted. He became violent …all of a sudden four to five of the helpers in the shop surrounded me. I, honestly speaking, got bit scared…….I told them politely as my friend already taken the set, there is no need for me to buy another one……..they laughed at my logic…..they told to as a Hindu you need to offer pooje separately, then only god will bless you……..I was at loss of words…I told them bit tensely “I am no Hindu “ now they were at loss words. We moved on …..guide moving with us…..I started scolding him for trapping us but my friend told me to shut up ……as, Even other wise he had plan to purchase the pooje materials, for the temple……….
At the temple guide dragged us to some more shops ………who offered diluted milk for the abhisheka……..I am resisting and my friend readily buying………..I looked at the temple ………it was not visible ……….. Covered by commercial shops………at the entry gate…….paramilitary forces made a search on us before letting us in……….terrorists everywhere……………..!!!!!!!!!!..........it was a usual temple ……..a north Indian one……….for me who’s home district in south has large number of temples……..that too world famous……..for their architect…….that made up of stones ……..this temple looked ultra ordinary………………..
Soon after entering the temple, another person again clad in religious clothings…….who called him self as pandit joined us……… I noticed he was the one of the……..guide’s poker game partner…….at the entrance. Soon he lead us to a statue- a lingam half immersed in diluted milk……..the priest at this particular statue….uttered few words in Sanskrit…..I being rationalist.least bothered about the meaning of the utternce…….my friend was not there , he had moved on………the new pandit was with me…….there was quite a bit of crowd.. I wanted to move on but the priest at the statue held me by my hand……asked me to give dakshina……….I looked at the pandit….he told me to offer him the amount whatever I liked………..I took my purse involuntarily…searched for an one rupee coin……….no there was none……took a five rupee coin………gave to priest………..he took it by a bit of surprise and disgust…….I was unable to understand his emotions………the pandit hurried me for the next statue……….on the way he told me dakshina is no less than 200 rupees here……I mumbled to my self…..some thing bad………with in moments I was at next statue, of course next priest………he asked my name …….I revealed it……….unwillingly…….next my parents name………my caste…………my gothra…….of which I had no clue………incomplete information does not bother this preist for him time is money…….in the real sense………ask me to repeat something nonsense……less than minute some archana was over ….he stamps my for head with red color powder…………some thing supposedly holy…….in a most ugly way……..asks me for 200 rupees or more if I pleased to offer him……stressing that Rs 200 is the minimum………how ugly……………I how can I give my hard earned money for nothing……I work for more than twelve hours a day and earn salary of only few hundreds per twelve plus hours duty……..how can I? I looked at my friend who was still in a religious looking face………waiting for my turn to get looted………I told this second priest “look as my friend already payed you , I don’t have to pay you……….we are the team……applying the philosophy of my train travel. Traveling in the Indian railways , that too in sleeper class……..is a night mare…….beggars are plenty, they come in variety , one type is sweepers……..who sweep only the walking passage……..if you don’t pay he will leave the entire dirt in your cubicle which he carrying along, from the first cubicle. So when one person pays………..others point towards that very person as their representative…..in that cubicle……..and dirt moves on. But this priest was no mood to listen to railway beggar philosophy…
“Your parent’s and his parent’s names are different, so payment should be separate”
“I never promised you to pay you, so I am not paying you”
“But I have done ………….pooje/ archana on your parents name already……no going back”
“Forget the money; I am not going to pay you……whatever you say.”
Meanwhile a newly married couple came at the statue……….led by another pandit…….time is money……..priest let me go, the unlikely bakra/ sheep.
My pandit mumbling all the way took me to yet another statue,……..oops!!! statues……
Known as sahasra lingam…………..I doubt the count… pandit this time had put very angry looking face………….obviously because of my previous stubbornness.
I told him I am not interested any more leave me alone………he was not ready to listen……he virtually dragged me to around the statues………..asking me to keep uttering some nonsense. At the end…….lead me to…….. yet another priest……….who told me……..mathe tekho………(touch the statue with forehead)
I did reluctantly…………… “Give dakshina ……….whatever you pleased with me…….”
I replied “I am not pleased with you, hence not paying you anything you………..”
He looked at me in an unexplainable……..disgusting manner. I did not care……………next ……my friend at the priest………he being religious………offered him the money………this time only fifty rupees………..as he had emptied all his money in the purse at previous statues………………and this priest not ready for the peanuts………he demanded more………..my friend looked at me………
“Give me money”
“No”
“Please give me; I will give back once we get back, from the ATM”
I had to give in, gave fifty rupees……………I turned to our guide and escort………shouted
“Enough!!”
Both visibly surprised …………….
“Leave us alone, some time”
They said ok, they shall wait outside. I spoke to my friend ……asked not to pay ……..if you are bankrupt……….he told me “ I am also not willing to pay but……….what to do………they make me pay……….it is ridiculous ……….he went on and on……..however, as he was religious; still some statues are were due for his visit. I stayed back………after few moments he came out visibly agitated……..shouting at the priests………….everybody was looking at us…..he was yelling “looters…looters”……..police personnel of security were smiling………..
The latest priest was not ready to let go my friend after matha tekho, for free. Despite my friend telling that the doesn’t have any more money……….it was too much even for a religious fanatic, that’ my friend.
Paramilitary personnel who was smiling “sir, these people loot money, kashi is worse among all north Indian Hindu temples, I was at mathura before, on duty they are less aggressive in looting”
I smiled back at him “Even if Mathura is less hostile; I will never visit Mathura…….its too much. For that matter any Indian temples even out of curiosity”
We went out……………..along with our so called guides………to the shop……..there were no welcoming gestures this time, by shopkeepers. They have had their prey……..!
The pandit asked us for dakshina from me
“Please give me dakshina, whatever, if you pleased with my service ……..minimum being 101 rupees”
“I am not pleased with you. So I am not giving the dakshina”
He became very wild instantaneously “you think service was for free?”
“We never asked you to accompany us, you came along as an agent, there was no agreement with you, whatever we agreed was with this fellow who offered his service initially as guide.”
The shop’s environment became tense……..everybody looking at us……..there were some new sheeps…….keeping their valuables in the locker, so the agent could not raise his voice
“Then, pay the person you, agreed to”
I took out purse, offered twenty rupees to the so called guide, which he readily refused on grounds that it is a too small amount; he won’t be able to accept.
We moved out of the shop………..but were soon followed by the so called guide……..
“Sir, sir wait…………….you can’t keep a Brahmin hungry , you will get punya if you give dakshina for food”
What a beggar!!!!!!!!!!!!!
“Ok, but as previously agreed, only twenty bucks”
“Do not make ashamed me sir, I am not a beggar, but a Brahmin give me twenty one rupees”
These Brahmins have some thing fancy about begging……….they want it with amount ending as one………1,21,31,10,501,1001,10001.1000001,100000001,. Probably this makes them class apart from the other beggars seen in trains……..bus-stand….etc………
“No, not single paisa extra than mutually agreed, takes it or get last”
Beggars will be beggars, my purse lost twenty more rupees……..because of beggars……..looters……….robbers…………………….
Next moment, we were free from the clutches of robbers………oops!…….beggars………we straight headed for ghats of the kashi……….where many religious people come in their last days…………..to die. The width of the Ganga was very fascinating, lots of devotees……….taking bath in the holy water to purify all their sins in one go ……….and go back to whatever they were doing………interesting concept!!!!!
Wait, did I tell holy water? Let me have closer look………actually, it’s the dirty water. I don’t understand why people go blind and loose sense of smell when they get into ritual like taking bath in Ganga. Too dirty by any standard…………even sewage water can some time smell better then Ganga. Looooooook unbelievable ………the Ganga water is available for sale in cans………some devotees filling their own can full for dirty Ganga water………Eurekha!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I found out the secret of sudden death which occurs, as repeatedly shown in Indian movies……..whenever elderly person on so called death bed, offered Ganga jal.. It probably makes death unbelievably faster………cyanide…….please take note.! My friend was still upset about the loot……..he was in no mood to forgive or forget the loot. I offered him that the fifty rupee I lended him, he need not pay back, offering to share some of the damages. I dragged him to river bank…to have some fun……got into a boat to get across the river. The huge sandy bank on other side was mesmerizing ………just for twenty bucks: to-fro journey…….on a manually driven boat. How reasonable………..these non– pandits looked more humane. He offered to be add on as guide for no extra fee……….he even took a lenthy route on request us for showing all the ghats from closer view , again for no extra fee, he explained about the seasonal variation in the ganaga’s water level, again for extra fee…………how to compare the pandit who looted my friend …….. and a non-pandit…….who is so kind…!!! Who has god in him ?…………among them……….if at all godliness stands for goodness.?
But my friend was not ready to accept this……….he was still consoling himself that he had given dakshina for GOD, not for Brahmins…….. if god gives so much , and generous………..why he has to beg his devotees for money/ dakshina…….can’t he do his job without accepting bribe? Are his god men at his temple allowed to loot people…under his direct supervision……..in front of his own statues? If at all he exixted……….can’t he punish them? Is he gone so impotent……………..? And in Hinduism there are one crore gods ………can’t they………….keep watch on these goonda like pandits? Its not even one to one ratio………it should be much easier.
We came back ……………for my friend nothing was looking interesting to him after the loot………he cut short my sandy bank expedition…………..on the way back to hotel I told him……….look , no need to feel sorry again and again…….. Cheer up! If you are good, god would live in you………no need to go to temple” he readily nodded his head in agreement with me, Finding a solace. I soon added “you know why I want to live…?……so that god can live in my heart ……….and its rent free accommodation……….so he do not expect any dakshina from me as rent is not required………….and you know why I want to live much longer……….so that god can have rent free accommodation in my heart for longer time……..
My friend was not too dumb to understand my sarcasm……………..
